What Is Leg Heaviness?
A feeling of heaviness or fullness in the legs is a common complaint of patients with vein disease. When the veins fail to function properly to pump blood back to the heart because of a weakening of the valves, the blood will flow back toward the foot, where it pools. Over time, the accumulation of blood will lead to a buildup of pressure in the veins – more pressure than your veins are designed to handle. This increased pressure is what causes the typical symptoms associated with varicose veins and vein disease, including vein heaviness.
If you are experiencing leg heaviness, you have probably noticed that your symptoms are less bothersome in the morning (because your legs were elevated during the night, which relieved the pressure) and worse at night (after gravity takes its toll).
