Varicose Vein Prevention / Maintenance

As the Premier Vein Care Center in Alaska, we want to prolong varicose vein development so that Alaskans can go  hiking, swimming, or just enjoy the outdoors.  Our patients tell us how leg pain, leg swelling, or the fact they have swollen varicose veins stop them from doing what the enjoy.  The Benjamin Franklin axiom that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” rings true for Varicose Veins. You can't prevent all types of varicose veins from forming; however, you can always prevent the ones you have from getting worse.

Why Is Varicose Vein Prevention and Maintenance Important?

Although prevention and maintenance will not fix existing venous issues, you can be proactive when it comes to the health of your legs.   This proactive Alaskan approach can help you be able to delay or prevent new varicose or spider veins from forming. This will make it less likely that you will have to undergo further venous treatments in the future.

Do Genetics Increase my Chances to have Varicose Veins?

Having family members who have varicose veins may raise your risk for the condition. About half of all people who have varicose veins have a family history of them.

What Varicose Vein Prevention and Maintenance Techniques Are Recommended?

There are a variety of things you can do to promote vein health, including:

Avoid standing or sitting for long periods without taking a break.

When sitting, avoid crossing your legs. Keep your legs raised when sitting, resting, or sleeping.
When you can, raise your legs above the level of your heart.

Exercise

This is the most important way to improve and maintain the health of the veins in your legs. Do physical activities to get your legs moving and improve muscle tone. This helps blood move through your veins.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight can contribute to vein disease. We advise you to stay within 10 percent of the recommended weight for your height.
If you're overweight or obese, try to lose weight. This will improve blood flow and ease the pressure on your veins.

Avoid Tight Clothing & High Heels

Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially those that are tight around your waist, groin (upper thighs), and legs. Tight clothes can make varicose veins worse.
Lower heeled shoes can help tone your calf muscles. Toned muscles help blood move through the veins.

Wear Compression Stockings

If your doctor recommends them, compression stockings can be very helpful.
These stockings create gentle pressure up the leg.
This pressure keeps blood from pooling in the veins and decreases swelling in the legs.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

We recommend a low-salt, high-fiber diet to promote vein health.
