What Is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless legs syndrome is a condition that causes people to experience uncomfortable sensations in their legs. These sensations often lead to an overwhelming urge to move the legs in an effort to relieve the discomfort. Some patients describe the sensations as “pins and needles” or a “creepy crawly” feeling, which vary in intensity from mild to nearly intolerable.

It’s believed that between 10 and 15 percent of the population have restless legs syndrome. It can affect people of any age, although it is most common in women, and the most severe symptoms are usually experienced by people who are middle-aged or elderly.

At the Alaska Vein Care, we can determine if your restless legs are a result of underlying vein disease through ultrasound technology. If we diagnose a venous disorder, we’ll recommend a treatment plan appropriate for you.

What Are the Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome?

Most people with restless legs syndrome are well aware of their discomfort, but these are some additional symptoms associated with the condition:

  • Cramping
  • Pain in the legs
  • Itching
  • Aching
  • Throbbing
  • Tingling
  • Burning

Symptoms often get worse at night, which can lead to insomnia. People who suffer from restless legs often report that the urge to move their legs is stronger after long periods of rest or inactivity and is relieved by moving.

What Can I Expect From Treatment for Restless Legs?

There are numerous factors that may contribute to a patient developing restless legs syndrome, including underlying vein disease. In fact, multiple studies found a correlation between leg restlessness and venous reflux. When the valves in the veins that control the flow of blood weaken, blood flows back towards the foot, where it accumulates, instead of towards the heart. This is called “reflux.” This accumulation can cause the throbbing, fatigue, aching and cramping that is experienced by patients with this disorder.

The good news is that treatment is available for leg restlessness at the Alaska Vein Care for those patients who are diagnosed with underlying venous disease. And what’s better? Once your vein disease is treated, you’ll feel relief immediately. In fact, in a recent study of people with restless legs syndrome and vein disease, 90 percent of patients noted a significant decrease in symptoms after the vein issues were treated.

Most patients will require two or three treatments to get satisfactory results. Unlike hypertonic saline (which most modern vein specialists do NOT use), today's sclerosants do not cause severe pain or stinging, and have a very low incidence of side effects. Insurance companies generally do not cover the cost of spider vein treatment, so be sure to discuss payment options with Alaska Vein Care's billing staff.
