What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are rope-like in appearance and raise above skin level due to swelling. They can be flesh-colored or may have a blue or purple tint to them. They are typically found on the back of the legs near the lower calf area and can appear in clusters, but can also present on the thighs and near the groin.
What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins, or thread veins, are smaller than varicose veins. They are usually red, blue, or purple. They may look like tree branches or spider webs. Spider veins can usually be seen under the skin, but they do not make the skin bulge out like varicose veins do. A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and the use of certain medications.
Are They Common?
It is estimated that one out of every five adults has varicose veins. While the severity can vary on an individual basis, many will experience a heavy feeling in their legs and an increase in muscle cramps. They can be hereditary or brought on by obesity, occupations that require extensive use of the legs, or hormone fluctuations.
How Do They Form?
Your veins are responsible for circulating blood throughout the body. However, when valves in these areas become weak, it can cause the blood to flow backward, resulting in pain and swelling.
What Treatments Are Available for Varicose Veins?
The treatment process for varicose veins has evolved significantly over the last few years. Complex surgery used to require stripping the veins but this method has been replaced with more non-invasive options like laser therapy, injections, and radiofrequency, which come with less recovery time.
