William G Schaeffer, M.D., a practicing interventional radiologist, spent many years as Chief of the University of New Mexico Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Radiological Sciences and Vice Chair for Quality and Safety for the Department of Radiology. Dr. Schaeffer is now excited to be offering his expertise to Alaskan communities as our lead specialist and Medical Director.
He has served in leadership roles within the University Medical Center including the Lobo wings Executive Steering Committee, the Hospital Quality and Safety Committee, and the Sandoval Regional Medical Center Medical Executive Committee. He was a founding member of the Association of Chiefs of Interventional Radiology. He has developed the existing model of IR at the University and successfully developed and implemented new Interventional Radiology program at The Sandoval Regional Medical Center in 2014 and the University of New Mexico Cancer Center in 2019. He remains board certified in Internal Medicine as well as holding the IR/DR certification.
He has a particular passion for Native American healthcare and has worked to lessen the disproportionate care of indigenous peoples across the state. He was previously the Hospital Director at Lovelace Medical Center where he successfully developed and ran their Hospitalist Division.
